Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has intensified internal Democratic tensions over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming speech to Congress by questioning the invitation, just days after Democratic leaders endorsed it. Pelosi’s televised comments have caused concerns among Democrats, complicating House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-N.Y.) efforts to navigate the divisive issue amid Israel’s war with Hamas.
Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) expressed disappointment, fearing it undermines leadership unity. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) supports the invitation despite boycotting the speech, warning Pelosi’s comments could deepen party divisions.
Pelosi, opposed to the invitation, labeled it “wrong” on CNN, predicting it would exacerbate domestic unrest. Some Democrats, like Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), support her stance, saying it resonates with many in the caucus.
Republicans are largely unified in supporting Netanyahu, with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) inviting him to address Congress. Despite differing views within the party, Jeffries and other Democratic leaders, after consulting the White House, endorsed the invitation, emphasizing the diplomatic courtesy extended to allies.
