Washington, District of Columbia — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats are positioned to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, sharply criticizing congressional Republicans for what she described as subservience to President Donald Trump.
In an interview with ABC News, Pelosi said she plans to spend her remaining time in Congress focused on helping Democrats flip the House and elect Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York as the next speaker. Pelosi, who announced she will not seek reelection in November, described Jeffries as a unifying figure with broad support inside the Democratic caucus and said she has no doubt he is ready to lead.
Pelosi argued that Republicans have weakened the legislative branch by deferring to the White House. “Right now, the Republicans in the Congress have abolished the Congress. They just do what the president insists that they do,” she said, adding that dynamic would change once Democrats regain the gavel.
Republicans currently hold a narrow House majority, with 220 seats compared to Democrats’ 213, following recent vacancies caused by resignations and a death. Pelosi predicted Democrats would be able to advance a more productive legislative agenda after the midterms.
Her retirement has also triggered a competitive race to succeed her in California’s 11th Congressional District. State Sen. Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, a former aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have both entered the contest ahead of the June 2026 primary. Pelosi said her focus, however, remains squarely on the national stakes of the upcoming election cycle.
