Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Wednesday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has sued New York over its “Green Light Law,” which restricts the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles from sharing noncitizen data with federal law enforcement.
“They have a tipoff provision that requires New York’s DMV commissioner to promptly inform any illegal alien when a federal immigration agency has requested their information,” Bondi said. The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of New York.
Last week, the DOJ sued Illinois over multiple laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker responded that Trump “has no idea what he’s up against when he attacks Illinois.”
Bondi, who has vowed to target sanctuary jurisdictions, unveiled the lawsuit alongside law enforcement officials and Tammy Nobles, whose daughter was murdered by an MS-13 gang member. However, she faced criticism for referring to the lawsuit as “charges,” misleading some to believe it was a criminal case.
