Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) condemned the forcible removal of fellow California Sen. Alex Padilla from a Department of Homeland Security press event last week, calling the incident “atrocious.” Padilla had attempted to question Secretary Kristi Noem at the Los Angeles press conference when he was restrained and handcuffed by security.

Footage shows Padilla identifying himself as a senator while being removed. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed Padilla did not identify himself or wear his Senate pin and called his actions “disrespectful political theatre.” Padilla disputes this, saying he was escorted into the event by a National Guard member and FBI agent.

Schiff defended Padilla’s actions on NBC’s Meet the Press, stating the senator was performing his oversight duties and did not deserve to be “tackled” and “shackled.” Democrats have since used the incident in fundraising emails, citing growing concerns over the Trump administration’s use of federal forces during protests.

Padilla and Senate Democrats are demanding the removal of federal troops from Los Angeles, where tensions have escalated over Trump‘s immigration policies and mass deportations.
