A significant portion of the Republican electors designated for Donald Trump in the 2024 Electoral College were involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, with some facing criminal charges. Of the 93 prospective Trump electors from battleground states, at least eight are charged with felonies for signing false certificates in 2020, while others previously supported conspiracy theories challenging that election’s outcome.

Despite the legal battles and the 2022 federal law reducing the likelihood of alternate slates, the reappearance of these figures reflects the influence of election denialism within the GOP. Mary McCord, a law professor at Georgetown, remarked on the “lack of regard” by state party leaders for the legal implications of retaining these figures. Notably, GOP officials in states like Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia have continued to nominate such individuals to key elector roles.

Among those returning are Michigan Republicans facing forgery charges, Nevada GOP Chair Michael McDonald, and Georgia GOP Chair Josh McKoon. Pennsylvania Republicans avoided charges by making their 2020 elector roles conditional, while other Trump electors in Arizona and Wisconsin continue to advocate for baseless fraud claims. Some Republicans, like former Nevada GOP Chair Amy Tarkanian, expressed dismay over the re-nominations, suggesting it underscores a shift in the party’s values.

Trump has continued to promote unfounded claims of voter fraud, setting a tense stage for the upcoming election, especially if the results are contested.
