More than 1,000 current and former employees of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign, citing actions they say endanger national health. In a letter sent Wednesday to Kennedy and Congress, staff accused him of “compromising the health of the nation” by ousting CDC Director Susan Monarez and appointing “political ideologues” in senior roles.

“Should he decline to resign, we call upon the President and U.S. Congress to appoint a new Secretary … whose qualifications and experience ensure that health policy is informed by independent and unbiased peer-reviewed science,” the letter states.

The campaign builds on a previous effort by staff who pressed Kennedy to better protect health workers after the Aug. 8 shooting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta. Since Aug. 20, an additional 887 staff have signed on, organizers said. HHS accused the group of politicizing the tragedy and said Kennedy has not responded directly.

Four senior officials resigned following Monarez’s ouster, adding to concerns. Signatories stressed they acted in personal capacity, with some remaining anonymous due to “fear of retaliation and threats to personal safety.”
