An investigation led by Sen. John Ossoff (D-Ga.) has uncovered 510 credible reports of human rights abuses within U.S. immigration detention facilities, including cases of physical assault, sexual abuse, and medical neglect affecting pregnant women and children.
According to the report, Ossoff’s office reviewed interviews, public documentation, and conducted site inspections across multiple detention centers. Among the findings: 41 reports of physical and sexual abuse, 14 reports of mistreatment of pregnant women, and 18 reports of abuse toward children.
One disturbing case described a pregnant woman who bled for days before being taken to a hospital, where she was left alone to miscarry without care for over 24 hours. In another, a woman was denied medical attention and told to “just drink water.”
A separate incident cited from the Miami Herald describes detainees packed into a room with one toilet, denied food and water. When they protested by flooding the toilet, officers allegedly used flash-bang grenades and rubber bullets.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.
The report raises renewed concerns about conditions in ICE facilities and adds pressure for congressional oversight and reform.
