OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, announced plans to combat the potential use of its technologies for spreading disinformation in the numerous global elections scheduled this year. With major elections in the United States, India, and Britain, OpenAI aims to ensure its AI tools do not undermine democratic processes.

The company stated it would restrict the use of its technologies, including ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, for political campaigns and lobbying purposes. This decision aligns with concerns about AI-driven disinformation highlighted by the World Economic Forum.

OpenAI is developing tools for reliable attribution of ChatGPT-generated text and detection of images created by DALL-E 3. The implementation of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity’s digital credentials is a key step in this process. This coalition, featuring prominent tech companies, focuses on improving methods to trace digital content.

Furthermore, OpenAI plans to guide users to authoritative sources for procedural election inquiries and has installed guardrails in DALL-E 3 to prevent the generation of images of real individuals, including political candidates. These measures follow similar initiatives by tech giants Google and Meta to limit AI-driven election interference.

The move by OpenAI comes amidst growing concerns over the quality and authenticity of political content online, including the spread of deepfakes and doctored videos of politicians, which have been debunked by fact-checking organizations like AFP.
