Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Thursday that the province will impose a 25% tariff on electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota, citing President Donald Trump’s fluctuating trade policies.

Ford, speaking on Fox Business Network, said the tariffs will take effect Monday as a countermeasure to Trump’s recent 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. While Trump paused the North American tariffs for a month, Ford criticized the policy’s impact, stating it has “created chaos” and will harm families and businesses on both sides of the border.

“People are going to be losing their jobs in the U.S. and in Canada, and inflation is happening already,” Ford said. He compared the economic downturn to the “American bobsled team going downhill” and called Trump’s approach “unacceptable.”

Both Canada and Mexico have threatened reciprocal tariffs, and China is also facing higher import levies due to Trump’s policies. Businesses are expected to face rising costs, impacting outsourcing and consumer prices.

The White House and governors of the affected states have not yet responded to the announcement.
