Oklahoma has revised its request for 55,000 Bibles to be placed in public schools, removing a requirement that matched a version endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Initially, the request mandated Bibles containing U.S. historical documents like the Declaration of Independence, aligning with the “God Bless the USA Bible,” which Trump promoted. These versions are significantly more expensive than standard Bibles.
The updated request now allows the historical documents to be included separately and extends the submission deadline by one week to October 21. State Superintendent Ryan Walters, in a video on X, defended the initiative, emphasizing the Bible’s historical significance and blaming the “fake news media” for spreading misinformation. Critics claim the original request catered to a specific product, but Walters’ office and the Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) stated the changes were made to ensure cost savings and legal compliance.
