Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno has come under fire for comments made at a town hall where he called “suburban women” single-issue voters focused on abortion, and questioned why women over 50 care about abortion access. Moreno said, “It’s a little crazy” that some older women prioritize abortion rights.
Moreno’s spokesperson downplayed the remarks as a joke aimed at his opponent, Sen. Sherrod Brown. However, Brown criticized Moreno, asserting that Ohioans believe in a woman’s right to make healthcare decisions.
Both Democrats and Republicans condemned Moreno’s comments. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley called them “tone-deaf,” and GOP strategist Maura Gillespie labeled them “moronic,” emphasizing the importance of women’s health beyond abortion. Gillespie warned such remarks could alienate crucial voters, referencing Ohio’s recent passage of a ballot initiative protecting abortion rights.
Abortion has become a pivotal issue in Ohio and across the U.S. since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, with several states voting to protect abortion access.
