Jeffrey Newcomb, 41, of Polk, Ohio, was charged on Tuesday with using a custom-made “Trump” sign as a weapon during the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack, federal authorities announced. The sign, approximately 8 feet tall and 10 feet wide, was used by rioters to ram police lines, according to an FBI affidavit. Newcomb, arrested on felony charges of assaulting police and interfering with law enforcement, had boasted about the sign on social media, where he described it as a protest tool and shared photos of the event.

Although Newcomb let go of the sign just before it struck police, authorities allege he helped push it toward officers. The sign, with its sharp metal frame, posed a serious threat, requiring more than a dozen officers to move it. Newcomb’s arrest contributes to the over 1,500 people charged in connection with the Capitol riot, over 1,200 of whom have pleaded guilty or been convicted.
