Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed Sunday that major social media platforms have shifted to favor right-wing interests, citing TikTok’s brief U.S. ban reversal as evidence. TikTok thanked President-elect Donald Trump for restoring access, raising concerns from Ocasio-Cortez about potential collaboration between the platform and his administration.
In an Instagram story, Ocasio-Cortez accused social media companies, including Meta and Musk-owned X, of favoring right-wing content and removing checks on misinformation. She suggested these changes align with what she described as “21st century fascism.”
Ocasio-Cortez praised the smaller platform Bluesky, where she recently became the first user to reach 1 million followers. She also linked the shifts in U.S. media to the leadership style of Hungary’s Viktor Orban, alleging Republicans are emulating his approach.
Trump has proposed TikTok continue operating as a joint U.S.-China venture, with the U.S. holding a 50% ownership stake.
