In a rare public response, former President Barack Obama rejected Donald Trump‘s latest conspiracy theories, dismissing allegations that the Obama administration attempted to rig the 2016 presidential election. Trump’s accusations came during a press conference Tuesday, where he claimed Obama and other senior officials “got caught” in what he called a “treasonous conspiracy.”
Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush issued a statement condemning the remarks. “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,” he said, adding that normally they “do not dignify the constant nonsense… with a response.”
Trump was referring to a memo released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, which accuses Obama-era intelligence leaders of suppressing internal assessments that Russia did not alter vote tallies—though no investigation ever claimed they did. The document alleges a plot to portray Trump as benefiting from Russian interference, though those claims remain unsubstantiated.
The Senate Intelligence Committee, under then-Chairman Marco Rubio, affirmed in 2020 that Russia interfered in the election to aid Trump, but found no evidence that votes were changed.
Trump mispronounced “seditious” during his remarks, calling Obama “sedatious” while claiming the memo offers “irrefutable proof” of a coup attempt.
