New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed willingness to collaborate with the incoming Trump administration after meeting with border czar Tom Homan. Adams stated their shared goal is targeting repeat offenders who are undocumented immigrants committing crimes in New York City. Homan, tasked with overseeing deportation efforts, was appointed by President-elect Donald Trump.
Adams emphasized his commitment to public safety, asserting, “We cannot allow dangerous individuals to commit repeated violent acts.” He clarified that New York City will not serve as a safe haven for individuals committing violent crimes, whether they are documented or undocumented immigrants.
Amid criticism of Biden’s immigration policies and a surge of migrants, Adams reiterated his goal of protecting New Yorkers. When asked about NYC’s sanctuary city status, Adams noted it is determined by the City Council but stated he would use executive orders to address violent acts by migrants and long-term residents alike.
New York City offers significant social services to low-income residents, including undocumented immigrants, but Adams signaled a focus on prioritizing safety. Meanwhile, Republican leaders nationwide are crafting proposals to support Trump’s immigration policies, including deporting millions living in the U.S. illegally.
