New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by federal prosecutors, making him the first sitting mayor in the city’s history to face criminal charges. The indictment follows a year-long investigation led by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams and has sparked immediate calls for Adams to resign from political rivals, including City Comptroller Brad Lander and State Sen. Zellnor Myrie.
The charges, expected to be revealed Thursday, are linked to a series of FBI raids involving Adams’ associates and campaign officials. Adams has vehemently denied the allegations, proclaiming his innocence in statements and videos released Wednesday night. “If I am charged, I am innocent and will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit,” he stated.
Despite the mounting pressure, Adams has insisted he will not step down. If he does, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would assume the role of acting mayor, with a special election to follow.
