In response to reports that the Department of Justice (DOJ) may seek to restrict gun access for transgender individuals following a church shooting, the National Rifle Association (NRA) voiced opposition Friday, affirming that the Second Amendment applies to all law-abiding citizens.

“The NRA supports the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding Americans,” the group posted on X, rejecting policies that would “arbitrarily strip” rights without due process.

Gun Owners of America echoed the sentiment, posting, “GOA opposes any & all gun bans. Full stop.”

The DOJ has not confirmed a specific policy but stated it is reviewing ways to address violence involving individuals with “specific mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders.” A DOJ official told CNN the goal is to prevent firearm access among those deemed unstable.

Critics say targeting transgender individuals would be unconstitutional. Advocacy groups accused the Trump administration of using isolated incidents to unjustly attack a marginalized community.

The DOJ’s next steps remain unclear as gun rights groups intensify opposition.
