After Twitter labeled National Public Radio as “state-affiliated media” on the social media site, a move some worried Wednesday could undermine public confidence in the news organization NPR has stopped publishing on the platform.
NPR’s Twitter page now has a message that reads:
NPR is an independent news organization committed to informing the public about the world around us. You can find us every other place you read the news.
On Thursday, Media Bias Fact Check pointed out that NPR receives 1% of its funding from the federal government and has independent editorial control.
NPR is not a state-influenced media outlet. Voice of America and Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty are state-affiliated in the USA as the government funds them through the U.S. Agency for Global Media. The USAGM is led by a single chief executive officer appointed by the president of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Based on this, these sources tend to promote the agenda of the administration in power, whereas NPR is not influenced in the same way.
As of Friday morning, Twitter still labels NPR as “State-Affiliated” media, and NPR has not published a news story on Twitter since April 4.
