In North Carolina, Democrats narrowly outnumber Republicans, with 2.4 million registered Democrats versus 2.3 million Republicans, as of October 12. However, unaffiliated voters, who total nearly 3 million, represent the largest group and could play a key role in the 2024 presidential race. Early voting has already begun, with 1.7 million ballots cast. The state, a critical battleground, saw a tight contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, with polls showing Trump leading by 0.8 points as of Wednesday, according to FiveThirtyEight.
Democratic voter strength is centered in Mecklenburg, Wake, and Durham counties, while Republicans dominate in suburban areas like Union and Johnston counties. Although Democrats traditionally hold a registration advantage, this hasn’t always translated into electoral victories, as Trump won North Carolina in 2020 by 1.3 points despite Democrats’ larger numbers at the time.
In addition to the presidential race, North Carolinians are voting for governor. Republican Mark Robinson trails Democrat Josh Stein, with Robinson facing scrutiny over past online activities.
Western parts of the state, hit by Hurricane Helene, have reopened most voting sites, ensuring minimal disruption in the affected areas.
