Governor Roy Cooper (D-NC) vetoed a Republican-backed bill that reallocates power from Democratic officials to the GOP-controlled Legislature. The legislation includes $227 million for Hurricane Helene relief but has been criticized for introducing unrelated provisions, such as changes to election laws and restrictions on gubernatorial authority.

The bill removes the governor’s power to appoint members of the state election board, limits the attorney general’s authority in lawsuits, and requires judicial appointments to align with the retiring justice’s party. Democrats argue it unfairly targets incoming Democratic officials while bolstering Republican influence.

The Legislature, losing its GOP supermajority in January, faces challenges in overriding the veto, needing three-fifths support. Cooper condemned the bill as unconstitutional and a partisan power grab.
