North Carolina Republican leaders announced Monday they plan to vote next week on a new U.S. House district map, a move likely to give the GOP another congressional seat ahead of the 2026 elections. The plan is part of a broader national redistricting effort driven by both parties as they seek to gain advantages in key states.

Republicans currently hold 10 of North Carolina’s 14 House seats after redrawing maps in 2023. The latest changes could target the state’s only competitive seat — the 1st District held by Democrat Don Davis, who narrowly won reelection in 2024. Adjusting the district’s boundaries could tip it toward the GOP.

Legislative leaders said the move follows President Donald Trump’s call for Republican states to “nullify Democrat redistricting efforts.” Similar actions are underway in Texas, Missouri, and California, each facing pending court or voter challenges.

The nationwide mid-decade redistricting fight could significantly impact control of Congress in 2026.
