Republicans are focusing on the issue of noncitizens voting in U.S. elections, arguing that legislation is needed to protect the integrity of the vote amidst high levels of illegal immigration. They’re pushing for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, and have placed noncitizen voting measures on the ballot in several states.
Democrats argue this is a distraction, part of a strategy to lay groundwork for election challenges. They point out that voting by noncitizens is already illegal in federal elections and there’s no significant evidence of it happening. Election administration experts agree, stating that the number of noncitizens voting in federal elections is extremely small.
Despite this, Republicans are pushing for additional proof of citizenship during voter registration. Democrats fear this could disenfranchise eligible voters who don’t have their birth certificates or Social Security cards readily available.
The debate has also highlighted how some local jurisdictions allow noncitizens to vote in local contests. This has led to ballot measures in some states aiming to prevent this practice. Despite the controversy, the number of noncitizen voters in these jurisdictions remains minimal. The debate continues as the country heads towards the next presidential election.
