Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called for dismantling FEMA in its current form, arguing that disaster response should be controlled by local officials while still receiving federal funding. Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Noem said, “We still need the resources… but you need to let the local officials make the decisions on how that is deployed.”
The debate over FEMA’s future has intensified following major hurricanes and wildfires. President Trump has criticized the agency’s effectiveness, stating, “FEMA has not done their job for the last four years.” His administration, alongside Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, has been reviewing federal spending.
Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom previously clashed over tying disaster aid to Hollywood subsidies. Noem, overseeing FEMA, aligns with Trump’s push for state-managed disaster response with continued federal financial support.
