Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Sunday that the Trump administration is evaluating both Democratic- and Republican-led cities for potential crime crackdowns, denying the effort is politically motivated. “Every single city is evaluated for what we need to do there to make it safer,” Noem said on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Her comments come as the administration prepares to expand immigration enforcement in Chicago, requesting logistical support from Naval Station Great Lakes to back up ICE operations. President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago if Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker does not address crime. Pritzker called the plan “an invasion” and accused Trump of seeking to influence the 2026 elections.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an order blocking city police from assisting federal agents in immigration enforcement, setting up a legal showdown if Trump proceeds with the plan.
