Andrew Johnson Aquitted of Impeachment:  On May 16th, 1868, President Andrew Johnson faced impeachment by the U.S. House of Representatives, charged with 11 articles including the illegal removal of the Secretary of War and violating Reconstruction Acts. His trial in the Senate, where he was ultimately acquitted by a single vote, highlighted the deep conflict between him and Congress over Civil War Reconstruction policies. Johnson, along with Presidents Clinton and Trump, are the only U.S. presidents to have the impeachment process reach a Senate trial, with Nixon resigning before a House vote. (More)
