Soviets Begin Withdrawal from Afghanistan: On May 15, 1988, the Soviet Union began withdrawing from Afghanistan, ending a costly eight-year conflict that strained international relations and drained Soviet resources. The departure did not bring peace to Afghanistan, where fighting persisted until Muslim rebels gained control in 1992.
