California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday his state will redraw its House maps after President Trump did not respond to his request for Republican-led states to halt mid-decade redistricting. In a statement on X mimicking Trump’s Truth Social style, Newsom called the upcoming maps “historic” and claimed they would help Democrats retake the House.

Newsom’s Monday letter urged Trump to have Texas and other red states abandon redistricting plans, warning they risk “destabilizing” democracy. He said California could match Republican gains with its own redistricting but would refrain if GOP states stopped. Trump was given until Tuesday evening to reply.

The White House has reportedly encouraged GOP-led states to redraw maps ahead of 2026 to expand House seats. Newsom said California is preparing a special election in November for its new maps.

Several Democratic states are also considering redraws in response to Republican efforts. Republicans face traditional midterm headwinds for the president’s party, and control of the House is expected to be closely contested.
