The Trump administration released approximately 150 California National Guard troops from federal duties in Los Angeles on Tuesday to assist with growing wildfire threats. It’s the first drawdown since Trump deployed thousands of troops, including 700 U.S. Marines, to suppress protests over ICE raids—moves that Gov. Gavin Newsom strongly opposed.

The decision followed a request by U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) Gen. Gregory Guillot, who cited wildfire response needs. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the transfer. Newsom hailed the move on social media: “@realDonaldTrump caved. Our firefighters are finally returning to fight wildfires. Better late than never.”

California is currently battling over a dozen wildfires, with the Wolf Fire in Riverside County prompting evacuations after scorching 2,400 acres.

Newsom continues to sue the administration over the military deployment, while the Justice Department blames LA’s sanctuary policies for enabling unrest. Mayor Karen Bass previously lifted a curfew citing successful crime prevention but also blamed federal overreach for escalating tensions.
