California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Wednesday that he and other Democratic leaders will hold a Thursday press conference to oppose a Texas plan adding five Republican-leaning House seats. The event, dubbed “Liberation Day” by Newsom’s press office, is set for 11:30 a.m. and will feature California legislators.

Newsom will appear alongside Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to outline efforts enabling mid-decade redistricting in Democratic states to secure additional House seats. Such moves require constitutional or bylaw changes in states where maps are typically redrawn only after the census.

In a Monday letter, Newsom urged President Trump to halt redistricting in Texas and other GOP-led states, warning Democrats could neutralize any Republican gains. Trump did not respond by the Tuesday deadline.

Trump has defended Texas’ plan, saying Republicans are “entitled” to more seats and that the FBI “may have to” pursue Texas Democrats who fled the state to block a vote.
