Nelson, New Zealand, Mayor Nick Smith corrected President Donald Trump after his inaugural speech credited Americans with splitting the atom. Trump’s remarks, aimed at highlighting American achievements, included the claim: “Americans…split the atom.”

Smith pointed out on Facebook that the honor belongs to New Zealand-born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford, who conducted the first nuclear reaction in 1917 while working at the University of Manchester in the UK. Rutherford, raised in Brightwater and educated at Nelson College and Canterbury University, is considered the father of nuclear physics.

Smith invited the future U.S. ambassador to New Zealand to visit Rutherford’s memorial in Brightwater to ensure the historic record is accurately represented.

Trump has yet to nominate an ambassador to New Zealand. His recent ambassadorial nominations include Kimberly Guilfoyle for Greece, David Perdue for China, and Mike Huckabee for Israel.
