Employers cannot request medical documentation from workers seeking this leave, which is distinct from existing paid sick leave policies. However, the benefit does not extend to spouses of pregnant women.
Hochul championed the measure in the last legislative session, citing its potential to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in the state. “No pregnant woman in New York should be forced to choose between a paycheck and a check-up,” Hochul stated, calling the policy a significant step forward for families.
