Following a substantial $454 million civil fraud trial victory against Donald Trump, New York Attorney General Letitia James continues to investigate unresolved matters related to the case. Despite accruing $5 million in interest on Trump’s debt since February, James is probing into a $175 million bond regarding Trump’s financial obligations to New York amid his appeal, with a review scheduled for April 22.

A significant area of concern for James involves allegations of withheld evidence, specifically regarding three internal Trump Organization email chains from 2016 not provided during the investigation. These emails, pivotal in convicting former Trump CFO Allen Weisselberg of perjury, highlight discrepancies in the document submission process, raising questions about the integrity of the trial.

James has requested a forensic review of the Trump Organization’s electronic data from August to September 2016, overseen by court-imposed monitor Barbara Jones. However, opposition from Trump’s legal team has stalled this process, underscoring ongoing disputes about the scope of the monitor’s authority and the transparency of document production.

This pursuit reflects James’ broader strategy of addressing potential spoliation — the improper loss or destruction of evidence. Although sanctions for spoliation could include fines, their impact is considered likely symbolic, given the comprehensive nature of the trial’s outcome and the accessibility of some disputed documents through alternative means.
