Belleville Mayor Michael Melham has instructed local officials to treat any downed drones in the area as potential security threats. Speaking on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus, Melham said the county bomb squad would be called immediately, and firefighters would wear hazmat suits to handle any fallen drones.
“We were told during our briefing that they might carry a payload,” Melham explained, likening the situation to a homeland security issue. Despite concerns from residents, he urged them not to shoot at or tamper with the devices.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim has expressed frustration over the lack of federal action and has called for a formal investigation to uncover the drones’ origin and intent.
