On the brink of the 100-day mark of the war in Gaza, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to continue its offensive against Hamas. The conflict, sparked by Hamas’ attack on October 7, has seen over 1,200 deaths in Israel and nearly 24,000 in Gaza, accounting for more than 1% of Gaza’s population. Amidst this, a 24-hour rally in Tel Aviv demanded the government secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
Netanyahu, undeterred by accusations of genocide against Palestinians, stated, “No one will stop us, not The Hague, not the Axis of Evil, no one.” He was referring to the support Hamas receives from Hezbollah and Houthi militias. Israel faces allegations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, charges it vehemently denies as libelous.
Israel insists that ceasing the war would mean a victory for Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S., EU, and U.K. An interim ICJ ruling is awaited, though Netanyahu indicated that Israel would ignore any directive to halt the fighting.
The conflict has resulted in numerous civilian casualties, with the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reporting two-thirds of the dead as women and children. The total number of wounded exceeds 60,000. The ongoing Israeli bombardment and ground fighting continue, severely impacting Gaza’s infrastructure, including hospitals and telecommunications. Fuel shortages are exacerbating the crisis, with vital medical facilities at risk of shutting down.
International pressure mounts on Israel to end the conflict, which has caused immense suffering. The United Nations reports severe restrictions on humanitarian missions by Israel, with only a fraction of essential supplies reaching northern Gaza. U.N. officials express frustration over the inability to provide adequate humanitarian aid due to these constraints. Over 85% of Gaza’s population has been displaced, and significant parts of the territory have been destroyed.
