Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended President-elect Donald Trump for his involvement in brokering a ceasefire and hostage deal with Hamas, set to take effect Sunday. “From the moment he was elected, President Trump has been involved in the mission for the release of our hostages,” Netanyahu stated Saturday, adding that Trump called him Wednesday to express support for the agreement.
The ceasefire, described by Netanyahu as a “temporary” and “provisional” arrangement, comes as negotiations for a second stage continue. Both Trump and outgoing President Biden have voiced support for Israel’s right to resume fighting if further talks falter.
Netanyahu also praised Trump’s decision to lift restrictions on arms sales to Israel, a move that drew criticism amid reports of high casualties in Gaza from Israeli airstrikes. “Leadership is tested in tough decisions,” Netanyahu said, reflecting on the ongoing conflict.
