Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday during a dinner at the White House that he has formally nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Netanyahu presented Trump with a copy of the nomination letter, citing the former president’s role in brokering the Abraham Accords and ongoing peace initiatives in the Middle East.
“He’s forging peace as we speak in one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu said. A surprised Trump responded, “This I didn’t know. Wow. Thank you very much. Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful.”
The nomination comes as Trump pushes for a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, including the release of 10 hostages and 18 bodies, through negotiations with Qatari and Egyptian mediators.
Trump has also been nominated by others this year, including Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) and, briefly, the governments of Pakistan and Ukraine, although some later withdrew their support.
