Nearly half of Republican voters support using the military to detain undocumented immigrants in camps, according to a PRRI survey. The survey found 46% of Republicans endorse this policy, compared to 19% of independents and 8% of Democrats. PRRI President Robert P. Jones highlighted that while most Americans oppose this idea, its popularity within a major political party is concerning.
Trump has suggested using camps and deporting 21 million undocumented immigrants, though studies show only 11 million undocumented individuals live in the U.S. Experts warn his plans could worsen the immigration system’s backlog, extending it from four to 16 years.
The PRRI survey also revealed that voters with authoritarian tendencies were six times more likely to support such policies than those rejecting authoritarianism (48% vs. 8%). The survey polled 5,772 adults nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 1.72 percentage points.
