Thousands of demonstrators filled streets across the United States on Labor Day, protesting Donald Trump and the influence of billionaires. The events were organized by May Day Strong, a coalition of labor and advocacy groups backed by the AFL-CIO, under the slogan “Workers over Billionaires.”
Organizers said more than 1,000 protests occurred in over 900 cities, with several hundred thousand participants expected nationwide. Large rallies took place in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., while smaller demonstrations were held from Florida to Idaho.
The protests highlighted concerns about corporate power and federal policies in Trump’s second term. In Chicago, where Trump has threatened a National Guard deployment, thousands opposed any federal law enforcement surge, according to Reuters. In San Francisco, local AFL-CIO leaders focused criticism on tech firms such as Palantir, which has expanded federal contracts tied to artificial intelligence.
Responding to the demonstrations, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said, “No one has done more for working men and women than President Trump,” citing tax cuts and $10 trillion in investments to create jobs.
