The National Guard is increasing its troop presence at the southern border to support U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) in enforcing migration policies. Over 1,600 National Guard troops, along with 4,100 Texas National Guard personnel, are already stationed at the border. Acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses also ordered 1,500 active-duty troops, comprising 1,000 Army soldiers and 500 Marines, with more deployments likely.
General Steven Nordhaus emphasized the Guard’s collaboration with federal agencies to meet evolving requirements, including logistics, airlift, and barrier construction. The Pentagon hinted that up to 10,000 troops could be deployed.
The U.S. has long relied on Joint Task Force North to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) with surveillance and transportation. Salesses has also tasked troops with assisting deportation flights and building both temporary and permanent border barriers.
