Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, a move reflecting ongoing tensions between the two leaders. Pelosi’s spokesperson confirmed her absence, joining other Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michelle Obama, in skipping the event. Some cited prior commitments, while others pointed to opposition to Trump and concerns about the event’s “chaos.”
Despite Pelosi’s absence, prominent Democrats such as Katherine Clark and Yvette Clarke plan to attend. Pelosi, 84, begins her 20th term after playing a key role in President Joe Biden’s decision not to run for reelection. She has filed paperwork for a 2026 campaign.
Former Presidents Obama, Clinton, and Bush, along with their spouses, will attend the swearing-in but not the inaugural lunch. President Biden, who attended Trump’s 2017 ceremony despite Trump skipping his own, is also confirmed to attend.
