Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said Thursday she will resume carrying a firearm for personal protection following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
“I’ll start carrying again when I’m back home, and when I’m allowed to carry where it’s reciprocal. In other states, I will have a firearm on my person all the time, and I will have security,” Mace told reporters outside the Capitol. She also requested local police protection near her South Carolina offices and said she would avoid outdoor events for now.
Mace argued that the $15 million recently allocated to Capitol Police for member security — about $5,000 per month per lawmaker — is insufficient. “For those here in Congress who are very vocal and are more well known than others, $5,000 is not much,” she said.
The congresswoman described Kirk’s killing as “an assassination” motivated by his political views, accusing Democrats of fueling violence despite their condemnations. “If you have a different opinion from the left, they want to kill you. That is a fact,” she said.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was a close ally of Donald Trump. Trump announced plans to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, while Vice President JD Vance arranged for Air Force Two to transport his casket to Arizona.
