The NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday challenging the Trump administration’s directives to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in K–12 public schools. Filed in Washington, D.C., the suit alleges the Department of Education’s actions threaten to reverse decades of civil rights progress.

The lawsuit follows recent letters from the department warning state education agencies to comply with federal DEI restrictions or risk losing funding. LDF argues the directives are factually inaccurate and based on misinterpretations of civil rights laws.

The Trump administration has framed its efforts as combating “anti-white racism” and issued executive orders aimed at eliminating DEI programs across federal agencies. The lawsuit also comes amid backlash over the temporary removal of websites honoring Black historical figures during a wider DEI purge.

Filed on behalf of the NAACP, the suit names Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Assistant Secretary Craig Trainor. It seeks to block the department from withholding funding over DEI policies and to preserve educational programs that support Black students.
