A team from Elon Musk’s SpaceX is set to visit the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Air Traffic Control System Command Center to provide recommendations on safety improvements following last month’s deadly air disaster in Washington, D.C.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the visit on Sunday, stating that President Donald Trump has ordered a “world-class air traffic control system.” However, the move has raised concerns as SpaceX has faced past FAA investigations and fines over safety issues. Musk, whose companies hold major government contracts, defended the initiative, stating, “SpaceX engineers will help make air travel safer.”

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has begun laying off “hundreds” of FAA employees. David Spero, president of the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists union, warned the firings would put additional strain on an already stretched workforce. The layoffs follow Trump’s accusations that the FAA prioritized diversity hiring over safety.

Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, which killed 67 people, but have cited faulty instruments and communication failures.
