Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has quietly removed its five largest reported cost savings from its online “wall of receipts” after media reports exposed significant errors in the claims. The removals came despite DOGE increasing its reported savings total to $65 billion, without explanation of how the revised number was calculated.
The largest errors included an $8 billion savings claim from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that turned out to be an $8 million contract, a $232 million cut at the Social Security Administration that was actually just $560,000, and a USAID contract counted three times that inflated a $18 million cut to $655 million.
The New York Times, CBS News, and The Intercept all reported on the miscalculations, raising concerns about DOGE’s transparency and accuracy.
The White House and DOGE have refused to answer questions about why the errors occurred or how the updated savings total was determined. Critics argue that Musk’s mass government firings and cuts are based on unreliable data, raising questions about the legitimacy of his cost-cutting campaign.
