An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employee affiliated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has accessed the agency’s Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), a database containing sensitive taxpayer information, according to an administration official.
IDRS provides IRS employees with instant access to taxpayer accounts for research, document generation, and collection efforts. According to IRS policy, users are only permitted to access accounts relevant to their official duties.
The employee, who joined the IRS during Trump’s second administration, reportedly had the appropriate security clearances. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields defended the move, stating, “It takes direct access to the system to identify and fix [fraud].”
The IRS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Washington Post first reported the development, marking an expansion of DOGE’s access to sensitive government data. DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has previously accessed Treasury payment systems and FEMA disaster data as part of its push to cut government spending.
The Trump administration faces lawsuits over alleged privacy violations related to DOGE’s data access. Critics warn that such actions could compromise taxpayer privacy and government accountability.
