Elon Musk has called for the release of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, founder of the English Defense League and the Urban Scoop website, who is serving an 18-month sentence for violating a court order related to libel against a Syrian refugee. Musk, a close ally of President-elect Trump, described Robinson as a “political prisoner” in a series of posts on X, his social media platform.

Musk also reignited his criticism of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, targeting his tenure as the U.K.’s Director of Public Prosecutions (2008–2013). He blamed Starmer for alleged failures in prosecuting grooming gangs, claiming only Nigel Farage’s Reform U.K. party could “save” Britain. Musk’s comments come amid his ongoing critiques of the Labour government, which he has described as leading a “tyrannical police state.”

Robinson’s group, the English Defense League, has been blamed for inciting riots after social media users falsely claimed a stabbing suspect in Southport was an immigrant and Muslim. The suspect, a 17-year-old U.K. native, killed three young girls in the attack.

Musk’s social media posts have sparked broader tensions. In December, he appeared with Farage at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, with speculation that Musk may donate up to $100 million to Reform U.K. Musk has also faced criticism in Germany for publicly supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany party ahead of its elections.

The Labour Party defended its response to historical abuse scandals and reiterated Starmer’s 2013 call for an overhaul of sexual abuse investigations. Despite Musk’s push for fresh elections, Starmer’s government, elected in a landslide six months ago, is not required to call another until 2029.
