Elon Musk stated he will fund moderate primary challengers to Democratic incumbents in strongholds across the U.S. to “get rid of those who don’t represent” voters. Musk made the comment on his platform, X, responding to Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), who criticized Musk’s earlier threats to primary Republicans supporting a bipartisan spending bill. Neal questioned the influence of Musk’s tweets on Congress during a heated floor speech.
Musk, co-leader of Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) with Vivek Ramaswamy, had denounced the stopgap spending measure to avoid a government shutdown. He urged voters to unseat any lawmaker backing the bill, spurring criticism and intensifying debate about his influence on Capitol Hill. Musk’s efforts, along with Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, helped derail the proposal.
Musk’s political action committee, America PAC, plans to support Republicans in upcoming elections, with Musk previously contributing $250 million to Trump’s campaign. After the bill failed, House Republicans proposed a new resolution to avert the shutdown but struggled to find consensus.
