Elon Musk, head of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced Saturday that all federal employees must submit a weekly report detailing their accomplishments or face termination.
“Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk posted on X. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”
The directive applies to nearly three million federal workers, adding to Trump’s aggressive efforts to shrink the federal workforce. Reports estimate that between 30,000 and 100,000 government employees have already been laid off, while 77,000 accepted buyouts under a deferred resignation plan.
The mandate sparked backlash from federal unions, with AFGE President Everett Kelley condemning the move as “cruel and disrespectful.” Musk defended the measure, stating it would eliminate “waste everywhere” in government operations.
The deadline for employees to comply is Monday at 11:59 p.m., raising concerns over its sudden implementation and potential legal challenges.
