Elon Musk polled users on X about reinstating Marko Elez, a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer who resigned Thursday after racist social media posts resurfaced.
“Bring back @DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now deleted pseudonym?” Musk asked, with over 80% of respondents voting “yes” by Friday morning.
Elez, 25, faced backlash after The Wall Street Journal exposed past posts, including “Normalize Indian hate.” Musk also called for firing the journalist who reported the story.
Vice President J.D. Vance defended Elez, saying, “I don’t think stupid social media activity should ruin a kid’s life.”
Elez had access to Treasury payment systems but was restricted from making changes. Reports suggest DOGE aimed to target U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) payments. The agency’s workforce has been cut from 10,000 to under 300.
