Washington, DC — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Thursday he expects Democrats’ names to appear in the Department of Justice’s forthcoming records on Jeffrey Epstein, but emphasized that political affiliation should not influence the release process. Speaking on CNN, Murphy said “so what?” when asked if Democrats may be included, adding that Republicans, business leaders and nonpolitical figures are also likely to appear in the documents.
Murphy argued President Donald Trump, who signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act this week, should not be viewed as a neutral party in the investigation. He said he believes the president has long been “connected to this scandal,” suggesting Trump could attempt to redact information involving himself. Murphy reiterated that the law requires full disclosure, stating, “It just doesn’t matter the political affiliation. The law is the law. They need to release the files.”
The senator’s remarks come as previously released House Oversight Committee emails included several references to Trump, who denies wrongdoing and has instead accused Democrats of deeper ties to Epstein. In posts on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the financier had long associated with prominent Democratic figures, including Bill Clinton and Larry Summers, and claimed the issue would “backfire on the Democrats.”
Under the new law, Attorney General Pam Bondi has 30 days to release the remaining files, with redactions allowed only for victims’ identities or materials that could compromise active federal investigations.
